It all started when I was in a stationary store getting some new notebooks. I noticed a set of zodiac designs, so I immediately picked up my sign (Capricorn) and bought it. Looking at the cute zodiac character on the cover, the thought occurred to me: everyone loves a good zodiac series, myself included! So I decided to draw the zodiac in my style, as chibis. Despite my tendency of starting themed series and never finishing them (hello, Disney Princesses) I thought at the very least I’d have fun drawing a few star signs without any pressure.
Fast forward a couple of months and this baby was born:
I found the Zodiac a source of endless inspiration and each one brought its own challenges. They needed to be familiar and recognizable, but not cliché and boring. I had to add a special touch to each one. I wanted an interesting and creative way to incorporate Cancer’s crab claws and Scorpio’s stinger for example. Starting off with just the 12 star signs, when the linearts began getting popular and after getting loads of positive feedback, I realized I just had to turn them into a full-fledged coloring book.
In a previous blog post I mentioned that my coloring books usually go through a long conceptual process including Pinterest boards, brainstorming, and To-Do Lists. This book was a completely different story – I got the idea and just went for it! Maybe it’s something to do with the long-standing love I have for astrology and mythology. In any case, the ideas kept coming and I was able to put together 26 illustrations! I went full-out for the zodiac theme, including the zodiac symbols, constellation and attributes.
I hope you love these designs as much as I do – I truly love each and every one and put my heart and soul into this book! The video below is a flipthrough if you’d like a closer look at all the book’s designs. Links to purchase the book from amazon, or a digital ebook from Etsy, are provided below the video!
